BIO

Andrea J. Loney’s children’s books celebrate the past, present, and future of Black excellence, triumph, and joy. She wrote the award-winning picture books Double Bass Blues (Caldecott Honor) and Take A Pictue Of Me James Vanderzee (New Voices Award and NAACP Image Award Nominee). Her most recent books include the picture book biography Curve and Flow: The Elegant Vision of L. A. Architect Paul R. Williams, the futuristic chapter book series Abby In Orbit, and the middle-grade biography VIP: Stacy Abrams – Voting
Visionary. Andrea lives in Inglewood,California with her family.

 

CURVE & FLOW: THE ELEGANT VISION OF L.A. ARCHITECT PAUL R. WILLIAMS

In this picture book biography an orphaned Black boy with a love of drawing and a dream of his perfect home defies the racism of 1920s era Los Angeles to become the first certified Black architect west of the Mississippi. Dubbed the Architect to the Stars, Paul R. Williams creates thousands of structures– including several LA landmarks, mobilizes efforts to help Black families and businesses work around racist housing practices, and finally builds the home of his dreams for his family.
