NINA CREWS is a critically acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator. Her first book, One Hot Summer Day, was published in 1995. Daughter of Donald Crews and Ann Jonas (Crews), she has followed in the “family business” creating picture books for young readers. While known for her distinctive photo collage style, Nina has recently put her camera aside to create digitally rendered and collaged illustrations in her latest projects.

Nina’s most recent books I’m Not Small is a Horn Book Fanfare selection and Chicago Public Library Best books of 2022. Her book written by Tameka Fryer Brown, Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm’s Fight For Change is a Kirkus and Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature’s Best Book of 2022. Other books include A Girl Like Me, The Neighborhood Mother Goose, Seeing Into Tomorrow: Haiku by Richard Wright, and Below. Her books have been recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) Notable Committee, the Black Caucus of ALA, The Horn Book, Junior Library Guild, National Council of Teachers of English, Cooperative Children’s Book Council, New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library, and Bank Street College of Education.

Nina is member of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and The Author’s Guild. She is a graduate of Yale University, where she received a BA in art and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program studio program for artists. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and son.

I’M NOT SMALL

I’m Not Small was written and illustrated by Nina Crews. The book tells the story of a young boy who feels small in a world that is made up of big, big things. But when he takes a closer look, he discovers that he is big, too. His dog is smaller than he is, and his cat is smaller than his dog. And the teeny-tiny ant crawling through the grass? Even smaller! This picture book introduces young children to the concepts of size and comparisons. A great choice for emerging readers, school classrooms, and story time sharing.
